How To Select The Finest External Hard Drive

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

Computers and the Internet have grown by leaps and bounds in the past several years. When I bought my first computer many years ago, the hard drive was only 80 Megabytes. Laughingly small by today’s standards. The sheer sizes of today’s hard drives is an indication of how far we’ve come since then.

Of course, so has external storage media. Ten years ago, the external hard drive market was very small, with only a few players. Today, however, finding the right back up system for your machine can be particularly troublesome, especially if you aren’t familiar with the specific terminology.

It’s important to know exactly what you want, and exactly what you want it to do before you go shopping. That way you won’t end up buying something that’s way too much for what you need, or on the other hand, you won’t end up buying something that just doesn’t have enough juice. When you figure out exactly what you need, you won’t be stuck with these common problems.

The first question is how big is your hard drive, and how many computers you will be using this for. If you have only one hard drive that is 100 GB or so, then your needs are minimum, and you could likely get away with a 500 GB back up system. However, if you have multiple computers, you may need some more horsepower.

Also, consider the type of data you’ll be backing up. Is it primary documents, or do you have a lot of music or video or other media that takes up a large amount of space? These effect the writing times, and this can effect which drive is absolutely best for you.

Another consideration is how often you plan on backing up your system. Some back up once a month, and that’s fine. Others back up every day, either before shutting their computer down, or as soon as they fire it up. This is another important consideration.

Portability is another concern. If you are planning on setting it down on your desk at home, behind your computer, that’s one thing. If you have several different computers in several different locations, then you’re going to need to make sure portability is a function of the device you plan on buying. Generally speaking, portable devices can be more expensive than desktop models.

With these ideas in mind, you will be much better equipped to choose an appropriate back up system for your machine. Once you are set up and backed up, you won’t have any more fear of data loss if your system happens to crash. Happy shopping.
