Garden Pests

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Gardening would be a lot simpler without interference from garden pests. The majority of garden pests are small, but they sure are a big hassle. The the majority of widespread garden pests are insects, of course and it is a curious thing that these insects are apt to prosper in conditions that are not quite correct for flowers. Most garden pests do not actually live on the plants themselves, they live in rotting rubbish nearby or in sodden soil and go to the plant to feed. Some insects live in the roots if the soil is too wet.

So, one of the first things to do is to try to lessen the number of destructive insects in your garden. You can go a long way down this route by clearing away any old decaying rubbish and decayed wood. Make certain that your soil is well drained and keep cats out of your garden by squirting them with a water pistol until they get the idea. Cats discourage birds and many birds eat insects.

You should also support insects and other animals that eat garden pests. Ants can be a nuisance, but they do eat a lot of insects. Ladybirds do too and so do spiders. Larger animals such as frogs, toads and lizards eat loads of insects, so a small open-ended garden pond could be created to breed frogs and toads. Lizards will come on their own, if the circumstances are perfect.

It is worth taking active steps to encourage the right sort of garden animals. Never use powerful insecticides on your garden as you will destroy all the insects that are on your side as well and the spray may poison the earthworms that are helping to aerate and dry out your soil.

A small pond will encourage birds, frogs and toads, but frogs and toads also like a nice rock to shelter under during the day. Place a few rocks the size of a loaf of bread around your garden in the shadow of trees or bushes. Erect a bird table. Birds that eat bread and nuts do not usually feed on insects, but some do. However, the sight of other birds in your garden may encourage insectivores to come in and have a look.

There are basically two kinds of garden pests: the ones that actually feed on the plant and the ones that extract the sap out of it. Caterpillars can be picked off and destroyed of or you can spray the leaves that are being eaten with a poison for the caterpillars to eat. Many of the sap-suckers can be seen easily, others cannot. A solution of washing-up liquid and water such as you use to wash dishes will kill most of these including greenfly (aphids).

Slugs and snails do a lot of damage, but some birds including chickens and thrushes find them a delicacy. Chickens can be helpful partners in a garden, but they can be detrimental too with all their scratching. Otherwise, you can reduce the population of slugs and snails by destroying their eggs.

They tend to lay their eggs in rotting leaves or rotting compost, but not in compost heaps which are normally too hot for them, so a good clean up will eradicate a lot of the next generation.

You can kill the adults by placing a few low containers of beer near your plants. The slugs will drink the beer and drown. It is extremely efficient. Slug pellets should finish the t-totallers off. Taking these actions will hugely reduce the number of garden pests attacking your plants.

The Origins Of Tennis

Friday, July 8th, 2011

The very first recorded mention of tennis was in the fourteenth Cycle of plays known as ‘The Second Shepherds? Play’ from the Wakefield Yorkshire writer known simply as The Wakefield Master. In scene VIII Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur?s round table plays tennis with a band of giants.

However, this would have been the medieval form of tennis known as real tennis which had evolved more than three centuries from an earlier ball game played in France around the 12th century.

This involved hitting the ball with the naked hand or later a glove and is thought to have begun with monks playing the game in monastery cloisters, judging by the construction and appearance of some of the early courts.

The game quickly proved to be a hit among European royals and in England was taken up by Henry V in the early fifteenth century. A hundred years later Henry VIII made the biggest effect as a young monarch, playing the game with enthusiasm at Hampton Court on a court he built in 1530.

The game flourished among the 17th century upper class in France, Spain, Italy, and in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but suffered under English Puritanism. By the time of Napoleon, the royal families of Europe were under threat and real tennis was mostly abandoned.

In England, during the 18th century and early 19th century, as real tennis became less popular, three other racquet sports emerged: racquets, squash racquets, and lawn tennis (the modern game).

The contemporary sport is tied to two separate inventions.Between 1859 and 1865, in Birmingham, England, Major Harry Gem, a solicitor, and his friend Augurio Perera, a Spanish merchant, united elements of the game of rackets and the Spanish ball game pelota and played it on a croquet green in Edgbaston.

In 1872, both men moved to Leamington Spa and in 1874, in the company of two doctors from the Warneford Hospital, established the world’s first tennis club. In December 1873, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield made up a similar game for the enjoyment of his guests at a garden party on his manor of Nantclwyd in Llanelidan, Wales.

He founded the game on the older real tennis. At the suggestion of Arthur Balfour, Wingfield named it “lawn tennis, and patented the game in 1874 with an eight-page rule book titled “Sphairistike or Lawn Tennis”, but he failed to be successful in enforcing his patent.

Tennis was first played in the U.S. at the residence of Mary Ewing Outerbridge on Staten Island, New York in 1874. In 1881, the desire to play tennis in competition led to the establishment of tennis clubs, which led to the four Grand Slams, which are regarded as the most important activities on the tennis circuit.

They are: Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open and they evolved into and have remained the most prestigious events in tennis. Both the name and much of the French vocabulary of tennis are borrowed from real tennis:

Tennis comes from the French tenez, the command form of the verb tenir, to hold: This was a cry used by the player serving in royal tennis, meaning “I am about to serve!” (rather like the cry “Fore!” in golf). ? Racquet comes from raquette, which comes from the Arabic rakhat, denoting the palm of the hand. ? Deuce comes from ‘? deux le jeu’, meaning “to both is the game” (that is, the two players have equal scores). ? Love is widely believed to come from “l’oeuf”, the French word for “egg”, representing the shape of a zero. ? The convention of numbering scores “15″, “30″ and “40″ comes from quinze, trente and quarante, which to French ears makes a pleasant sound, or from the quarters of a clock (15, 30, 45) with 45 simplified to 40.

How You Can Genuinely Appreciate Your Wine Online

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Wine Online can teach you how you can increase the flavor of your drink. You thought that a tulip was a flower and a flute was a musical device? Well, they also happen to be types of glasses created for use with sparkling wine. The tulip is the essentially shaped glass for Champagne along with other sparkling wines. It can be tall, pointed, and smaller on the rim compared to the center of the bowl. This shape helps support the bubbles inside the wine longer, not letting them escape openly.

The flute is another great sparkling wine glass however it is less suitable as opposed to the tulip because it doesn’t slim at the mouth. The trumpet actually broadens at the mouth, making it less suitable for sparkling wine yet very sophisticated looking. Another drawback of the trumpet glass is the fact that, with regards to the design, the wine can certainly fill up the entire stem, meaning the wine gets warmth from the heat of your hand as you hold the stem. Apart from picking out a style, to the stem and also to the size there is another consideration to look into which would be the appearance of the bowl.

This is deemed crucial since very good glasses taper in considerably at the very top, so that the opening is narrower compared to bowl lower down. While this form is good to look at, it is also of practical importance. The tapered shape of the wine glass serves to concentrate the aromas once the wine taster utilizes a circulating action. Swirling emits precious aromas from the wine and the tapered opening helps compliment this. This design is evident in glasses designed for Pinot Noir in which the wide range of aromas is valued and important while experiencing and enjoying the wine.

You may want to select a design similar to what wine institutes created as an all-purpose wine glass. It is actually five and one half inches tall with a one and three quarter inch stem. The crystal clear, tulip-shaped pan possesses a capacity of eight ounces. There is also regular wine glass, but just like many of the wine glasses you could collect as souvenirs when tasting at vineyards it might be a more suitable size for tasting wine given that it’s somewhat small for drinking wine.

Wine Online will make you relish the goodness of your wine. Be certain not to fill a wine glass too full, 1 / 3 to one half full at the most. You want to leave room to capture the bouquet within the upper bowl as it goes up from the swirled wine, and to allow the glass to be tilted. It should be at approximately a forty-five degree angle to gauge and enjoy the color of the wine. Your wine glass stem gives you something to hold onto without heating the wine using your body heat. If the wine happens to be served too cold, cupping the bowl in your hand is a simple way to quickly make it warm.

Looking At Wine Online To Master New Things

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Wine Online isn’t just about buying wines. Did you know that wines are also used in religious events in many civilizations and the wine trade is of historical significance for a lot of places? Libations usually included wine, and the spiritual mysteries of Dionysus are often thought to have used wine as being an entheogen. The New Testament even states that Jesus’ initial miracle was to change water directly into wine, and the Old Testament says that the particular fermentation of grapes was known by Noah after the great deluge referred to in Genesis. Wine remains an essential part of the Eucharistic rites in the Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican denominations of Christianity.

Apart from religious uses, wine also has health advantages. Scientific studies are being carried out to find out what the apparent benefits of consuming wine or alcoholic beverages in some populations may be due to, including the function of antioxidants, an increase in High-Density Lipoprotein or good cholesterol levels or anti-clotting attributes. Clinical tests of other antioxidants like vitamin E haven’t shown any cardio-protective effect. Also, even if they were defensive, antioxidants could be obtained from many fruits and vegetables, which includes red grape juice.

The best-known effect of alcohol is a slight increase in HDLl cholesterol levels. However, regular physical activity is another efficient way to boost HDL cholesterol levels, and niacin could be given to raise it to a greater degree. Alcoholic beverages or some compounds present in alcoholic beverages may stop platelets in the blood from adhering with each other. That could reduce clot creation and lower the risk of heart attack or stroke. Aspirin may help reduce blood clotting in a similar way. Just how alcohol or wine beverages affects cardiovascular risk merits further research, but today the American Heart Association does not suggest consuming wine beverages or some other kind of alcohol to achieve these possible advantages.

The AHA does recommend that to lessen your risk you should speak to your physician about reducing your cholesterol and blood pressure, controlling your weight, getting sufficient physical activity and adhering to a healthy diet. There is no scientific proof that consuming wine or any other alcoholic drink can substitute these traditional actions. Wine is a light natural tranquilizer, serving to reduce nervousness and pressure. As part of a normal diet plan, wine provides the body with energy, with substances that help digestion, and with small quantities of vitamins and minerals. It can also encourage the desire for food.

Wine Online can help keep you healthy if you know how to take care of yourself. Additionally, wine serves to restore nutritional balance, alleviate tension, sedate and act as a gentle euphoric agent to the convalescent and especially the elderly. The health content of wines are minimal. There is no fat, cholesterol, or dietary fiber in any wine. The keys to the beneficial aspects of wine drinking are frequency and moderation. The significance of this routine of consumption can’t be over-emphasized. An occasional serving of wine is better than nothing, but overindulgence can be considerably more harmful than total abstinence.

Gnekow Family Winery is satisfied with the wine beverages they produce, the location they are part of as well as the men and women who inspire them to come up with “Great Wines at Great Prices”. Should Infants Be Exposed To Mosquito Repellents?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Mosquitoes have caused assorted life threatening illnesses in tropical countries such as India particularly during the monsoons. These small creatures carry disease causing viruses which cause malaria, filaria and dengue fever from one person to the other, from one animal to the other and from animal to human and vice versa.

It is good to note that mosquito repellents help to stave off mosquitoes for a short time depending on the body sort, climatic conditions and state of the body, but can never obliterate them fully.

You could have a wide assortment of mosquito repellents, but not all of them might prove suitable and ideal for your infant. The choice varies between synthetic chemicals and plant derivatives that are discovered in the form of creams, lotions, sprays, wipes, roll-on sticks, foams, liquid vaporizers, sprays, coils, and mats. In addition, you can buy electronic items that depend on electromagnetic fields and ultrasound waves to repulse mosquitoes.

Your choice of the best repellent depends entirely on your baby?s requirements and the precautions that need to be taken. It is best to check with your child?s pediatrician or a dermatologist who will suggest the best mosquito repellent.

Pediatricians advise avoiding the use of mosquito repellent creams and lotions on children under the age of six months as these chemicals could result in allergic and toxic reactions when applied directly to the baby?s skin.

However, it is advised that if you have to use a cream or lotion it is best to check with your child specialist and then put the repellent on the child?s clothes making certain you avoid parts where the child could stick it in its mouth.

The use of liquid vaporizers, coils, sprays, and foams are extremely unadvisable as they could cause breathing allergies and other problems in your baby. In case you should, take your baby in when the fumes are given off.

The use of baby mosquito nets and natural or herbal remedies are safer until the infant is older. Try lighting citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes in your infant’s room.

It is worth mentioning that essential oils like margosa, citronella, peppermint, and eucalyptus can help ward off mosquitoes, however it is unadvisable to apply these oils directly on the skin as they are strong.

However putting a few drops on the bedding would help. Mopping the floors with a few drops of essential oils added to the water would help and prove safe also.

Prevention would be better rather than repelling mosquitoes particularly for children. Maintaining a spotless home and avoiding stagnant water standing in coolers, flowerpots, open drains, small ponds, bird baths, pets’ utensils and other bodies of water and adding a couple of drops of kerosene oil in the water would thwart mosquitoes breeding.

In addition, ensure your child does not perspire if you leave it unattended, for mosquitoes breed in humidity. It is best to dress your baby in light coloured clothes fully covering the body, which would also help prevent mosquito bites.

Furthermore, avoiding powerful fragrances in the form of lotions, soap, oils or floral scented perfumes or room fresheners would help preclude the attraction of mosquitoes. Also, keeping food covered over always will help inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes.

Last but most crucial, fix wire mesh and screens on all doors and windows and keep them closed all the time particularly at dawn and dusk and help your baby get fresh air but with freedom from mosquitoes.

World Of Warcraft Movie For WOW Fans

Friday, May 6th, 2011

I’ve been playing games since I was a kid and I struggled for many years with people who thought online games were silly and action games made you violent. I considered this a chance to show a few insight into what gaming can really involve – passion, friendship and experiences you cannot get in the real world. ~ Ben Dressler

Let us face it, the gamer way of life is one thing that not many people have an understanding of. /AFK The Movie examines the life of a video gamer told to give up the one thing he has ever loved: World of Warcraft.

To the people who do not play video games, that’s referred to as quitting. For hard-core gamers and MMORPG players around the world, that is known as “Euthanasia.”

The movie examines what life is like moving away from the keyboard, to cut off the thing you love doing, simply because you realize that it controls all that you do. But, what is the fine line between adoring video games and being obsessed with them? Does it really make a difference and should we even care?

The topic of /AFK The Movie covers World of Warcraft and online gaming. But you don’t need to know the difference between Horde and Alliance for you to connect with the film. We’re all addicted to something, whether it is cellular phones, internet sites, video games, or chocolates (or a dangerous combination of all four). Step “away from your cellular phone” for 1 day and find out how you react. Is a cellular phone that much different than a video game? Exactly why is one an addiction and the other is just a habit?

I chatted with Ben Dressler, the filmmaker who made /Afk come to life.

What was the task like making the movie, and from his own point of view, what message was it trying to communicate to gamers and people telling so-called “addicts” they have to stop:

JHS: What inspired you to make the script? Did you feel as if you wanted to write something which can speak “for all WOW players?”

Two things. First, the feeling that no one had ever done this in the past. I think it’s truly rare that you have an idea that’s kind of unique and not actually available. When I initially saw Memento I was so blown away that after a long time of filmmaking, an individual could still think of something so imaginative. Although we were not the first to combine real live action and video game footage, I do not know of any film who made it happen to the degree that we did.

Second, I wanted to make a stand for gaming. I’ve been playing video games since I was a kid and I struggled for a long time with individuals who thought online games were stupid and action games made you chaotic. I considered this a chance to show some knowledge into what gaming really can cover – passion, friendship and experiences you can’t get in real life.

JHS: In your own opinion, why do individuals feel the need to put down the “gamer” way of life?

I actually believe that they just do not know much better. The main character in /afk says at one point: It is not just me sitting in front of a coloured window.” But that’s exactly what individuals see whenever they see someone “game.” They don’t see what you think, feel or even experience as you play. I have had a lot of individuals that observed me play WoW and believed it was really boring. However when I let them play for an hour or more, they would buy the game themselves. Luckily, people who have gaming experience will grow into important positions such as journalism or politics. So at some point that inclination to look down on gamers will diminish from society, I am pretty optimistic on that.

JHS: You mentioned you generally had no funds because you could not gain from the film, What kind of limitations did that put on you as a filmmaker?

Since I knew there wouldn’t be a budget from the start, I could focus on writing a script that would work with few characters and locations. We had five days of shooting for a 25 minute film with a very small crew. And since I did not like to rush the actors too much, there was short amount of time left for the camera and lighting team. We also could not manage to purchase a lot of props so we had to work with everything we got in our homes. The bedroom of the main character is basically made of geek items from ten people combined.

It pretty much came down to pulling lots of favors and using to the best what was already there. I’m sure if you choose to work with that constraint, it’ll easily result in new, innovative ways of telling your story. Although I recently read that German filmmakers particularly get into Hollywood mainly because they can make low-cost movies that look like really expensive movies. Well, that’s flattering, isn’t it?

JHS: What would you say to those who deal with individuals telling them to “quit video games.”

It really is not easy to provide a general answer to that one because it depends on the situations. Generally I would recommend to try and make those individuals understand what gaming means to you. Know why they think games are brainless and show that you understand them also and take their concerns seriously. Don’t just switch to retaliation mode. When I was in school, I used to speak with my mom and dad about the games I was looking forward to play and what I found interesting about them. In most cases I could make them relate to that somehow.

JHS: Based on the lack of success of some major movies, it appears very difficult to take the concept of a video game and turn it into a film – with only a few movies making an effort to “get into” the daily life of BEING a gamer. What was your experience in this regard?

I believe there are two kinds of game movies… Adaptations and Sci-Fi movies. Adaptations tend to be awful OR just solid action movies with the game’s name in the title… And so yeah, there is little films about real gamers – to be honest I can’t name a single one. And I’m quite in wonder about that!

But it’s challenging, and I do think that the individuals who make it must know video games as completely as films….My point is that to really learn from Video Games as a medium, filmmakers need to understand how a game tells its story, what things can be translated and what things can not.

JHS: Exactly what does WOW present that hardly any other game on the face of the planet offers?

To tell the truth – you can find a couple of games on earth I have not played yet! Nevertheless, I think that WoW did and does a terrific job at making hardcore gaming available to many individuals. Back in EverQuest days, MMORPGs were a very exclusive genre that even the majority of gamers didn’t know or love. These days you are going to raid with people who wouldn’t even look at themselves a real gamer. And yes, maybe that is a piece of pioneer work that hardly any other game can repeat again.

If you’re looking for a unique video game show which brings Holywood and video game together, then The Jace Hall Show is the right one for you. It features movies like World of Warcraft movie as well as the discussion of World of Warcraft fans.

Patio Furniture

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

If you have a lovely patio or deck or a beautiful garden, then you have to have good patio furniture in order to enjoy it. There is no finer end to a busy day than sitting outside on the patio with a drink and a newspaper or a book. I like to sit in the garden after the sun has waned a little, but before the mosquitoes come out for a few hours reading a book.

There are many different styles of patio furniture to choose from that range from classic to modern. There is also a full range of choice in that there are chairs, loungers, swinging sofas, tables, outdoor fridges, barbecue sets and patio heaters amongst other things. A full set need not cost more than $1,000, but you can start with a table and two chairs and build up your patio furniture set step by step.

The many choices you have when looking for patio furniture are the style and the material it is made from. Most patio furniture stays outside all day and all night in any weather, so it important to get furniture that is well-made and weather-proof. All weather furniture is usually made from plastic-coated steel, wicker, massive wood or moulded plastic.

Whatever you choose, make sure that the guarantee makes your choice worth the money. For example, I mean, if the furniture costs $200, but has a 12 month guarantee, then you should be prepared to pay $4 a week for your investment and everything else is a bonus.

Another tip is to buy your patio furniture from a reputable manufacturer or a reputable retailer, unless it is massive timber furniture in which case you will want a reputable local craftsman. It depends where you live of course, but any patio furniture is going to have a hard time of it and it will remain outside sometimes no matter what your intentions are now.

Standard plastic patio furniture is pretty good and will stand up to all but the coldest of weather, which can make it become brittle. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have the same effect on cheap plastic chairs. White is the usual colour, but there are others. Make sure that you buy something that will take your weight, especially if you are a bit on the heavy side. I have had legs of plastic chairs go on me, but luckily I was on grass both times. On concrete or near the edge of raised decking could be very serious.

Once you have chosen your patio table, chairs and possibly loungers, there are one or two other things that I think are essential to allowing the complete enjoyment of your patio deck. For example, if you want to use your outdoor furniture in the evening you may find it nippy or you may be troubled by insects.

This need not be a problem. You can get a patio heater at quite a reasonable price. A gas patio heater will keep up to eight people lovely and warm. To complete your patio furniture set, you might want a mosquito trap of some sort.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Buying And Maintaining Farmhouse Garden Furniture

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Farmhouse garden furniture is otherwise known as rustic garden furniture and goes back to the olden days of farms and country living. It has a style all of its own and is quite distinctive. Generally, farmhouse garden furniture is coarse, massive and heavy. Occasionally it is roughly hewn, but that is not always the case although it is seldom carved in great detail. Farmhouse garden furniture is made to last.

Farmhouse garden furniture includes the complete assortment of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, gazebos and arbours. Farmhouse garden furniture is customarily made of local wood, but can also be made of iron.

To compliment the garden furniture, there is also indoor furniture in the farmhouse style although this might be a little finer, a little less heavy so that it can be moved around for cleaning purposes.

Farmhouse garden furniture is usually manufactured from local hardwood such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, teak or beech, but in fact anything that is to hand. Softwood, such as pine, is cheaper, but it does not usually last as long as hardwood even if it is maintained regularly and as it should be.

Hardwood furniture can be stained, oiled or varnished, although it is usually best to just rub linseed oil into the natural timber. A bit of staining might help bring out the charming natural graining in the wood.

Softwood garden furniture is normally full of knots which many people find ugly. If this is how you think, then you can give the furniture three coats of paint in order to safeguard it.

If however, the knots do not worry you, you can stain and varnish it instead. In either state of affairs, all farmhouse garden furniture should be maintained every year in the autumn; that is when the sun is no longer at its hottest and before the rain and cold weather set in. The trouble with anything manufactured of any wood is rot.

Hardwood contains more natural oils than softwood so it is better able to protect itself, but all timber ceases producing these oils when you kill it by chopping it down. The oil on the surface is dried out by the sun and these dry patches then suck some oil up from deeper inside itself, but the further inside it has to draw the oil from the less it can suck, which means that eventually the outside becomes dry and then it will take in water.

When that occurs, rot has set in. Hardwood can last a couple of years before it gets to this sorry state, but softwood will perhaps last less than a year. This is why you have to seal the oil in and the water out with paint or varnish in the instance of softwood or replenish the oil by rubbing in linseed oil in the instance of hardwood.

You could paint hardwood too if you want to, but most people buy hardwood farmhouse garden furniture because it has a lovely grain and paint would only cover up that grain. Decent farmhouse garden furniture is not cheap, but it is attractive, difficult to steal and will last a lifetime if well looked after by a few hours maintenance once a year.
