How Search Engines Work

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Sometimes referred to as ’spiders’ or crawlers, automated search engine robots seek out web pages for the user. Just how do they accomplish this and is this of importance? What is the real purpose of these robots?

A search engine robot is a very simple program that has some basic functionality to help it understand web pages. However, spiders only have limited functionality to interpret websites: they cannot interpret frames, Flash video, images, or JavaScript; they can’t enter password-protected areas and can’t click buttons; they can be stopped by dynamically-generated URLs and JavaScript navigation. However, within HTML code, they’re able to retrieve data by travelling through the web to find information and links.

Spiders are able to determine the content of your page by looking at the visible text, the HTML code, and links. Based on the words it finds, the spider determines what the site is about using a complex algorithm to determine what is and isn’t important. Spiders also collect links from websites to follow later, which allows them to effectively hop from site to site to site. Since the entire internet is made up of links between websites, the robots use them to make their way through the internet as they search.

By collecting and following links, robots manage tn transport themselves all over the internet. Think of it as an internet equivalent of the roads we use in our lives. Robots travel on the roads and read the signposts so they know what leads to where.

To ensure that searchers get the right results with the most relevant response to their query, quick calculations are done to see that this happens. Server logs and log statistics program results can be checked by the user to see what pages have been visited and how often. Some robots may be easy to identify such as Google’s ‘Googlebot’, while less well-known ones such as Inktomi’s ‘Slurp’ are not easily identifiable. Some robots even appear to be human-powered browsers.

A robot ‘reads’ your site by collecting data on any visible text, on tags you may have in the coding of your page, and on any links available. These are the things that determine what the search engines ‘think’ your content is about, so these are the things you really need to pay attention to when building a site that you want to have high visibility in search results.

If you’re interested in seeing which pages the spiders have visited on your website, you can check your server logs or the results from your log statistics. From this information you’ll know which spiders have visited, where they went, when they came, and which pages they crawl most often. Some are easy to identify, such as Google’s ‘Googlebot,’ while others are harder: ‘Slurp’ from Inktomi, for example. In addition to identifying which spiders visit, you can also find if any spiders are draining your bandwidth so that you can block them from your site. The internet has plenty of information on identifying these bad bots. There are also certain things can prevent good spiders from crawling your site, such as the site being down or huge amounts of traffic. This can prevent your site from being re-indexed, though most spiders will eventually come by again to try re-accessing the page.

How To Super-Power WordPress Search Engine Optimization

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Wordpress out of the box provides fundamental management of the main SEO meta information. To expand the functionality we add our own super-charged version of the All-In-One-SEO Pack. The SEO pack makes it easy to modify the page title and page meta description.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack is a great WordPress plugin that finishes off the SEO aspects for WordPress. For some unknown reason WordPress still has not got the SEO fixed out of the box.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack provides for you to change the most important page components – page title and page description. It also allows you to change the page keywords, but as we all know, search engines no longer take note of these because they have been spammed too much in the past. Google ended using the keywords for page ranking in the early 2000’s.

Page Title tags

This is the No1 SEO component to control. Always make sure that you manipulate the page title. The page title appears in the browser window at the very top of the screen. Search engines use this in the listings and display it in their search results.

) between the words.

The page title is the MOST important SEO page element because it is like the title of a book. And just like a book title, if it is good it will be more attractive to readers.

If your page needs to extend to cover two or 3 keywords we have learned that you can still get solid rankings from adding multiple keywords to the title. But do remember that the closer the page title is to the keyword you want to rank for the better.

Even though it is best to keep the page title just to the keywords you want to rank for, if you are a branded company you will also most likely want to add in your brand name so that it is displayed on Google in your listing.

Page Descriptions

This element is NOT used by search engines for ranking purposes. Even So, virtually all search engines will utilize this in their search results so it is important. We have found that Google will use the description most of the time. We have not yet learned how it resolves if to use it or not. At other times Google will use the first piece of text that it can find on the page. On Flash pages this can be an issue seeing there is no text content. This is one reason why you should constantly add at least one sentence of HTML text on a Flash based page so Google and other search engines have something meaningful to display in the search results.

By having a good description it will increase your click through rates because the text will be more fascinating to people. Ensure that you use a maximum of 156 characters. If you use any more characters Google will truncate the rest. If you can keep your descriptions to–0 characters or less this is even better seeing Google sometimes adds a date to the start of the description which is part of the 156 characters it displays.
